Background of the Study

Hypertension is a major public health concern, particularly in rural communities where access to healthcare services is limited. Early detection through screening programs is essential in preventing complications such as stroke, heart failure, and kidney disease (Okafor et al., 2024). Nurse-led hypertension screening programs have been recognized as effective strategies for identifying at-risk individuals, providing health education, and initiating timely interventions.

In Ebonyi State, where healthcare infrastructure is underdeveloped, nurse-led hypertension screening programs have been introduced in some rural areas. However, the effectiveness and reach of these programs remain largely unexplored. Understanding their impact is essential for improving hypertension control and reducing cardiovascular disease burden in rural populations.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the high prevalence of hypertension in Nigeria, many cases remain undiagnosed due to poor access to healthcare services. Nurse-led screening programs have the potential to bridge this gap, but their implementation in rural communities faces challenges such as resource constraints and low community awareness (Chukwu et al., 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led hypertension screening programs in rural Ebonyi State.
  2. To assess community awareness and participation in these programs.
  3. To identify challenges affecting the success of hypertension screening programs.

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurse-led hypertension screening programs significantly improve early detection rates.
  2. Community awareness influences participation in screening programs.
  3. Resource limitations hinder the effectiveness of hypertension screening programs.

Definitions of Terms

  • Hypertension Screening: The process of measuring blood pressure to detect hypertension.
  • Nurse-Led Programs: Healthcare initiatives led and managed by nurses.
